My first blog post and it just so happens to fall on a holiday filled with one of my favorite drinks – the spicy jalapeño margarita! Not to mention the first 80-degree day in Chicago – aka I finally feel like a human again 😁
As some of you may know, cooking is not my thing, but I think I got the whole drink department down (except for an old fashioned – still working on that one. Apologies to my friend Christina who I secretly made my taste tester haha). Anyway, lately I’ve been obsessed with anything and everything that has a little heat. I’m talking dousing everything in hot sauce, chili flakes and Cayenne pepper. So, when it comes to my drink of choice, of course I choose spicy, and in honor of Cinco de Mayo, I’m sharing my version of the spicy margarita (not that you need a holiday as an excuse to make this!).
If spicy isn’t your thing, ditch the jalapeño peppers and cayenne and follow the steps below. For those that like extra spicy, soak the jalapeño peppers in tequila prior to mixing the ingredients. The longer you soak, the spicier your drink will be. Cheers to the weekend!
SPICY MARGARITA
Yield: Serves 2
Prep Time: 5 minutes
Total Time: 5 minutes
INGREDIENTS
Margarita Salt (I used this premade one)
Ice
1 jalapeño pepper, cut into thin, round slices (you can always increase or decrease based on how spicy you want them!)
4 ounces of Tequila (I used Jose Cuervo)
4 ounces orange juice
3 ounces lime juice
2 teaspoon agave nectar
1 To 2 Fresh Lime Wedges
Cayenne pepper, to taste (optional)
INSTRUCTIONS
Rim two margarita glasses by running a wedge of lime around the edge of the glass and dipping them in lime salt. Fill the glasses with ice and set aside.
In a bowl, use a spoon to muddle the jalapeño peppers. Then, add ice, muddled peppers, tequila, orange and lime juice and agave nectar into a cocktail shaker. If you want a little extra heat, add a touch of cayenne pepper. Shake for 30 seconds until chilled and strain into the margarita glasses filled with ice.
Top with a wedge of lime and add 2 slices of jalapeño peppers on top.
