New year, new living room! Well, kind-of. For the last few months, I really wanted to bring more of a rustic, cozy vibe to our space, but also didn’t want to give up my love for gold and glam. The result? A Rustic Glam Home Decor Refresh!
This mini home refresh all started because we hated our furry, white carpet. Aesthetically, the carpet was just what I wanted – so cute and glam which is what I was going for. Cleaning wise, it was the biggest pain in our butt. We both agreed that in the new year we’d get a new carpet but in my mind, a new carpet means an opportunity for a new living room.. i.e. time to redecorate 😊
Here’s the final look:
And here’s what the space looked like before we got to work:
Surprisingly the carpet decision was made pretty quickly. We visited Ryan’s cousin and I fell in love with the carpet they had in their guest bedroom. Ryan liked it too, and just like that we had a new carpet. But of course, I wasn’t done.
The next big thing I wanted to address about our living room was the layout. I’ve been teetering with moving our couch for a while to help bring more light into our space. The way our couch was set up blocked half of our windows and the pretty city view, so we moved it to face the window. It was different at first and definitely something we had to get used to (goodbye open concept!), but we’ve grown to love it. Ryan likes that the TV isn’t the main focus (so hopefully we’ll be more productive this year) and I LOVE all the natural light.
Another big change we made was to our wall décor! The previous wall art above the couch was nice, but I felt it was a little too stuffy and I wanted something that was more homey and cozy. Enter the gallery wall! I’ll put together a separate post with details of the gallery wall process, prints, and sizes in case you’re interested in creating your own. We LOVE how this wall turned out! What’s cool about it is that we’ll be able to swap out the images every season which will help refresh the space.

Our TV stand, coffee table, mirror and bar cart stayed the same, but I moved the bar cart out of the little nook between the bedroom and bathroom and positioned it behind the couch. I wasn’t sure if I liked it here, but it’s much more functional and is very pretty so it makes sense to show it off 😊

Another portion of the home I struggled with was this blank canvas I had in between the kitchen and the high table. My bestie Britt, who is the queen of everything and teaches me all I know about cheese platters and more, used her empty space to create a little cookbook nook and suggested I do the same. And I freaking LOVE it. It’s exactly what the space was missing. Her shelving unit is a full wall and has every single cooking book you’d ever want – it’s perfection and something I’ll need in my home once we purchase. I filled mine with three books for now and this beautiful wooden sign that my mother-in-law got us for our anniversary. It’s our wedding song 😊

We also hung 12 Gallery Wall Frames on the wall across from the kitchen to tie all the wall art together. Eventually, we’re going to swap out the images that came with the frames (which are still very beautiful) with pictures from our own travels.

Finally, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do with the little nook I mentioned above. I brought out my clothing rack that was in our bedroom and nestled it in the nook and it looked fine, but then our family came over and said, “Now this makes me think that there might be a little overage happening in the clothing department.” And they weren’t wrong. I cleaned out my closet, got rid of almost two suitcases of clothes and stored the clothing rack in storage for when we have a home with more space (i.e. a second bedroom 😊). In the meantime, I thought it could be a cute spot for a cozy blanket nook.
