If you’ve been following along the last few months, you already know that not only is Easter my favorite holiday, but I love a little arts & crafts – especially around the holidays! And decorating Easter eggs is like my Super Bowl 😁 It’s a time to tune into your inner artist and let loose because when it comes to blank canvases, the opportunities are endless!
While scouring the web for some egg decorating ideas this past weekend, I stumbled upon a creative idea of my own, inspired by the tea I was sipping on! The best part? It only requires three simple and cost-efficient ingredients (not including the egg): loose tea, food dye and a Ziploc bag! Not only is this egg decorating idea super easy, but it’s also quick which is great when you’re in a pinch!
Maybe it’s just my family, but when it comes to holidays, we could always use more prep time. Our family tradition includes waking up early on Saturday morning and decorating ALL the eggs (we need to feed a family of nine after all!), before heading to church for the Easter basket blessing. More often than not, we get crunched for time as we’re running around the kitchen making sure we haven’t forgotten any goodies. The Easter basket blessing starts at 11 a.m. and at 11:03 a.m. you can find Gabby, my youngest sister, running to the front of the alter with two big Easter baskets trying to find a spot among the hundreds of baskets already there. You can find me and my sister, Angelika, chuckling in the back as we watch her stomp back through the aisles. She is the youngest so duty calls, right?
After the Easter blessing, there is always a photo opp outside the church (I mean you need to get your Insta photo!) and then an egg hunt for the kids. Last year it got rained out, but this year we’re hoping to see baby Bev in full action! We’re a competitive family, so naturally, she was born for this 😆
Let me know if you have any unique egg decorating ideas, or traditions!
Happy decorating!

Jo
Materials
- Loose ground tea, or tea bags (I opened tea bags and used the ground tea from there)
- Food dye (I used McCormick)
- Cooked eggs, white
- Ziploc bag
- Paper towels to dry the eggs on
Instructions
If you’re using tea bags, tear them open and pour the contents into a Ziploc bag. Fill the bags a quarter of the way, or until the bottom of the bag is coated evenly.
Squeeze 2-3 drops of each of the desired food dye colors you want to use.
Place one egg into the bag and zip until closed.
Gently shake the bag, covering the egg with the tea leaves. Continue shaking until the egg is fully covered in your desired color. If you’d like the color to be stronger, add in a few additional food dye droplets.
Gently remove the egg from the bag and set on paper towel to dry.
Bonus tip: Take a piece of uncooked bacon and wipe the surface of the colored egg with it for some shine!
